How to Recover a Stuck Bridge Transfer from Ethereum to Base
A bridge transfer from Ethereum to Base that appears stuck is almost always waiting for the Ethereum side to confirm enough block confirmations before the Base side can mint your funds. The standard resolution is to wait, but if the transfer has been pending for more than 30-60 minutes, you can manually retry the claim on Base using the bridge's interface or the transaction hash.
Why transfers get stuck
Cross-chain bridges work by locking your funds on the source chain (Ethereum) and then minting an equivalent amount on the destination chain (Base). This process requires:
- Your initial transaction to be confirmed on Ethereum
- The bridge's relayer to detect that confirmation
- A second transaction on Base to mint the wrapped tokens
Most delays happen at step two. The relayer may be slow due to network congestion, high gas fees on Ethereum, or a backlog in the bridge's queue. Sometimes the transaction on Ethereum confirms but the claim transaction on Base fails silently because of insufficient gas or slippage.
Step 1: Check the Transaction Status on Ethereum
Open Ethereum block explorer (Etherscan) and paste your original transaction hash. Look for:
- Status: Must show "Success" (not pending or failed)
- Block confirmations: Should show at least 35 confirmations for the official Base bridge; some third-party bridges require more
If the transaction is still pending on Ethereum, you cannot proceed. Wait for it to confirm. If it failed, you need to redo the bridge transfer with higher gas.
Step 2: Use the Bridge's Recovery Tool
Each bridge has a "claim" or "retry" function. For the Official Base Bridge (bridge.base.org):
- Go to bridge.base.org and connect your wallet
- Click "History" or "Transactions" in the top menu
- Find the stuck transfer - it should show as "Pending" or "Ready to claim"
- Click "Claim" or "Complete" - this triggers a new transaction on Base
- Confirm the transaction in your wallet (you pay gas on Base for this claim)
For Across Protocol or Stargate, the process is similar but located under a "History" or "My Transactions" tab. If you don't see the claim button, use the transaction hash directly:
- Across: Go to across.to/bridge, click "History", paste the Ethereum tx hash
- Stargate: Use stargate.finance, click "Transactions" and look for the "Claim" option
Step 3: Claim Manually via the Block Explorer
If the bridge interface shows nothing, you can claim directly using the bridge contract on Base. This is more technical but works when the UI fails:
- Copy the transaction hash from your original Ethereum bridge transaction
- Open BaseScan (basescan.org)
- Go to the bridge contract address (find the current address on the official bridge site)
- Use the "Write Contract" tab (requires connecting your wallet)
- Find the
claimorclaimGasfunction - Paste the Ethereum transaction hash as the input parameter
- Execute the transaction - this will cost a small amount of ETH on Base for gas
When to contact support
If the transfer has been pending for more than 6 hours and none of the manual methods work, contact the bridge's support:
- Official Base Bridge: Use the help button on bridge.base.org or reach out via the Base Discord
- Across: Use their Discord or the "Help" channel
- Stargate: Use their Discord or the "Support" channel
Provide them with: - The Ethereum transaction hash - The amount you bridged - The wallet addresses (from and to) - Screenshots showing the pending status
What not to do
- Do not send another bridge transfer while the first is pending. This can cause confusion and may result in both getting stuck.
- Do not approve any contract or sign any message from someone claiming to be "bridge support" in DMs. Real bridge support will never ask you to approve a transaction or share your private key.
- Do not attempt to cancel the original Ethereum transaction if it already shows as successful. Cancelling a confirmed transaction is impossible, and trying to "double-spend" the same funds will only lose you more gas fees.
How long should you actually wait?
Most bridge transfers complete within 5-15 minutes. The official Base bridge typically processes claims within 2-5 minutes after Ethereum confirms the deposit. Third-party bridges can take longer. A reasonable patience threshold is 1 hour before you start manual recovery steps. After 3 hours with no progress, manual intervention is appropriate.
Preventing future stuck transfers
- Use the official Base bridge or well-known third-party bridges (Across, Stargate)
- Set your Ethereum gas fee to "normal" or "fast" - low gas bids get stuck in the mempool
- Ensure you have enough ETH on Base to pay the claim transaction gas (about $0.50-$2 worth)
- Avoid bridging during Ethereum gas fee spikes above 100 gwei, as relayers may deprioritize your transfer
If after following these steps the funds remain inaccessible for more than 24 hours, the bridge provider's support team is your only recourse. Provide them with the details above and wait for a response. Most stuck transfers resolve within a few hours with manual intervention.
